Job Description
This position is for engineers passionate about power electronics, power conversion, and system-level power delivery. The successful candidate will work with experienced Field Applications Engineers and Power Systems Engineers to support customer designs, validate and characterize power solutions, troubleshoot complex technical issues, and help customers deploy industry-leading power management technologies.
The role is based in Austin, Texas, and supports customers in the Texas area while using Renesas' engineering laboratory in West Lake Hills for hands-on validation, testing, and debug activities.
Responsibilities and Day-to-Day Activities
Partner with senior Field Applications Engineers to support strategic customer programs throughout the product lifecycle, from initial concept and design through validation and production.
Assist with validation, characterization, and optimization of Renesas digital multiphase power solutions used in AI, cloud, server, and networking systems.
Perform hands-on laboratory testing including: Efficiency characterization
Load transient testing
Power sequencing validation
Telemetry verification
Protection features validation
Fault analysis and root cause investigation
Power rail characterization and measurement
Support customer board bring-up, power supply debug, and system-level validation activities.
Participate in schematic reviews, component selection, and PCB layout reviews for high-current power delivery systems.
Develop technical reports, characterization summaries, validation documentation, and customer-facing presentations.
Learn and utilize industry-standard test equipment including oscilloscopes, electronic loads, network analyzers, power analyzers, and source measure instruments.
Assist in the development of automated validation methodologies and data analysis workflows.
Work closely with Product Marketing, Applications Engineering, Product Line Management, and Sales teams to support customer engagements and design win activities.
Build the technical knowledge, communication skills, and customer experience needed to progress toward independently supporting customer design, validation, and troubleshooting activities.
Qualifications
Education
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
Recent graduate or candidate expecting to graduate before the position's anticipated start date.
Requirements
Academic or project-based foundation in power electronics and analog circuit design, with exposure to control systems, electronic circuits, or embedded systems.
Fundamental understanding of DC-DC converters, switching power supplies, feedback control loops, analog and mixed-signal circuits, and circuit analysis techniques.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems in a team environment.
Willingness to travel periodically to customer sites and work in a laboratory environment.
Must be located in, or willing to relocate to, the Austin area, with regular access to Renesas’ Austin laboratory and customer sites in the Austin area.
Preferred Experience
Internship, co-op, undergraduate research, or industry experience in power electronics, power supply design, hardware engineering, validation engineering, systems engineering, or semiconductor applications engineering.
Experience designing, building, or debugging switching power supplies.
Experience with simulation tools such as LTspice, PSpice, SIMPLIS, MATLAB/Simulink, or Cadence extraction tools.
Experience with laboratory equipment, including oscilloscopes, electronic loads, power supplies, spectrum analyzers, and digital multimeters.
Experience with scripting or automation using Python, MATLAB, or similar tools.
Design project, thesis, or research related to power conversion, voltage regulator design, battery management systems, motor control, power integrity, or renewable energy systems.
Familiarity with PCB design, layout considerations, and power delivery networks.
