ABOUT US
Insurance is one of the largest industries in the world, and it still runs on manual work nobody wants to do. Claims is the clearest case: high-volume, repetitive workflows handled over the phone, by email, and across 200-page PDFs, most of it sitting in systems built in the early 2000s. Software has circled this problem for decades without touching the core of it, because nothing could make the calls or read the documents. AI finally can. Avallon builds agents that run the full claims lifecycle, from intake to settlement, so teams can move faster, eliminate busywork, and get more right.
Out of YC we went from zero to seven figures of ARR in twelve months, and are now growing 3X quarter over quarter while working with some of the largest carriers in the world. Avallon is backed by top investors, and our founding team includes builders from MIT, Harvard, and Cornell. We aim to become the automation layer for the entire insurance industry, and we intend to get there with a talent-dense team where everyone is enabled to do best work of their careers.
THE ROLE
Our agents already do the work. They make the calls, read the records, and close the file. What we have not built yet is the thing our customers sit in all day while that happens.
Right now that surface is an interface an engineer put together so the agents had somewhere to report. It works. It was never designed. In the next few months the largest insurance companies in the country start running real claims operations through it, and it has to hold up as the system their users live in.
We are hiring our first designer to own that. Every surface a customer touches, from the screen an examiner opens at 8am to the report an executive reads on Friday. You will build the design language, the research practice, and the bar for everyone who joins after you.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Own every surface a customer touches. The claims workspace, the review and exception flows, how an agent shows its work and its sources, the reporting an executive sponsor reads. You decide what good looks like, and you are accountable for whether it ships that way.
Turn an agent platform into a system people work in. Our customers are replacing software they have used for twenty years. That means density, explicit state, and interfaces that make frequent tasks faster.
Design the interaction model for agents doing real work. A user has to see what the agent did, why, what it read, and where it was unsure, then agree or intervene. You’ll shape that experience with users and engineers.
Ship it. You turn customer problems surfaced by FDEs or customers into clear workflows and drive them with engineering from discovery through delivery, owning usability and measuring whether the solution works for users.
Find and measure friction. Own UX instrumentation and analysis, combine behavioral data with user research, and test whether changes help users complete their work with less effort.
Set the bar. Build the design system and the principles behind it. As design grows here, you are the natural person to lead it.
YOU
- 5+ years designing software, with end-to-end ownership
- Portfolio depth in dense, technical software. Something an operator uses for six hours a day
- You sit with the person doing the job, watch what confuses them, and change the design instead of defending it
- High agency. Nobody assigns you work and there is no design team to hide inside
- Based in NYC and excited to work in person
NICE TO HAVE
- Exposure to insurance, claims, healthcare, or another compliance-heavy operational domain
- You have designed for AI products and have opinions about citations, confidence, and human-in-the-loop flows
- Brand and visual identity work
- Early-stage startup experience, especially as the first hire in a function
WHAT WE BELIEVE IN
- Eating well: We provide lunch and dinner every workday from local restaurants.
- Staying healthy: 100% of medical, dental, and vision insurance covered, along with a generous monthly gym stipend.
- Getting out of the office together to recharge: quarterly offsites somewhere you actually want to go.
